Urgent Care

We realize that emergencies are never planned and we want to be here to help you and your pet any way possible. Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists is pleased to offer your pet a day time and after hours urgent care service which ensures that your pet will be able to be seen as soon as possible whenever needed – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!  This service is available for pets that are established patients of Gulf Coast Veterinary Cardiology, Critical Care, Dermatology, Internal Medicine, and Oncology.

The urgent care service does not take appointments – we are here to see patients that require same day emergent care.  As a result, we ask for your patience when you arrive.  Much like the human emergency rooms – patients that are more critical are seen first.  Patients are not always seen in the order that they arrive.  As a result, there is likely to be a longer wait time to be seen versus what you experienced when you were seen as a scheduled appointment.

The daytime urgent care service is staffed by our board certified Critical Care specialists, residents and interns. We are available to see your pet whenever there is an urgent problem that needs to be addressed the same day.   Whenever possible, we will try to have your pet seen by the specialist that regularly sees you and your pet.  However, because of the last minute nature of emergencies, this is not always possible.  The urgent care doctor has full access to your pet’s records and will be able to provide your pet with the care needed.

Our after-hours urgent care service is available from 6pm to 7:30am.  If your pet experiences an urgent problem during these hours, you can bring your pet into Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialist without the need to visit an emergency clinic.  We have complete access to your pet’s records and lab work.  If admitted to the hospital, the following morning, your pet’s care will be transferred to the specialist who regularly sees your pet so that treatment and communication can be continued in a seamless manner.

FAQ

  • How do I know if I am able to be seen by the after hours service?

If you and your pet have an established relationship with a doctor in Cardiology, Critical Care, Dermatology, Internal Medicine, or Oncology your pet can be seen by our after hours service.  All doctor and department records are shared and accessible to our after hour doctors that we will have the most current history on your pet’s condition and care.

  • If my pet is having an emergency situation, what should I do?

If your pet is experiencing an emergency situation after business hours, please contact us at 713.693.1155.  Our staff of technicians or the on duty doctor will be available to answer your call and assist with your concerns.  Based on the information, the doctor may be able to assist you over the phone or recommend you bring your pet in for evaluation.

  • What should I expect when being seen after hours?

The on duty doctor will have already reviewed past and present history we have on file prior to arrival.  Upon your arrival, your pet will be examined by a highly trained critical care technician to assess their immediate health concerns. If your pet is deemed stable enough they will be brought back to you in the exam room.

During your appointment, a complete physical will be performed by the doctor to assess your pet’s condition and retrieve a current set of vitals such as heart rate, respiratory rate, weight, temperature and blood pressure. If emergent medical concerns are detected, your pet will remain in ICU for interventional treatment until stabilized, at which time the doctor will come in to review their findings and discuss their potential treatment plan.  Further testing or treatment will be made based on the doctor’s assessment of your pet and their history. A detailed estimate will be presented to you and your consent received prior to starting any diagnostics or treatments.

  • What if my pet needs hospitalization overnight?

If your pet requires hospitalization and monitoring, we are staffed and capable to admit your pet into our ICU unit.  We have trained technicians to perform in house lab testing as well as diagnostic imaging as needed to provide the best care for your pet.

  • Do I have to pick my pet up by a certain hour in the morning?

If your pet is hospitalized, you are not required to pick your pet up first thing in the morning.  Our overnight doctor will transfer Patient care to one of our day doctors for continued monitoring and care.  You will receive a Patient update in the morning with all necessary information regarding health update, doctor in charge, etc.
